Review of Mission: Impossible, Ghost Protocol 2011

Even though there are minor references made to the previous films in this franchise, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol feels less like a sequel and more of a reboot. With Brad Bird at the helm, this film delivers an epic sized display and the intense action is non stop and serves to keep the adrenaline at a high. The return of Tom Cruise is welcome and he reminds us of what an old fashioned action hero is all about.

Thanks to his presence, Ghost Protocol feels like a return to the late 1980's and early 1990's and the films that turned Cruise into the Hollywood powerhouse that he is today. The addition of Simon Pegg to the cast gives the film just the right amount of quirky humor to lighten up even the most dramatic of moments, and never distracts from the heart pumping thrills that are relentless.

Fans of Harry Potter will no doubt vote the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 as their top action flick of 2011, true action fans will have Ghost Protocol firmly at the top their lists. This film starts with the introduction of a new IMF team; Jane is played by Paula Patton and Simon Pegg is Benji, the engineering whizz.

These two set off to free Ethan Hunt (Cruise) who is incarcerated, but our locked up hero is rather reluctant about leaving jail the easy way. This sets the tone for the entire film, Hunt is still the bad ass we have come to know and love, and his team always go about things the hard way.

Following a mission to the Kremlin that badly backfires, IMF is disbanded and Ghost Protocol initiated. The US is intent on distancing itself from the Kremlin incident so our intrepid heroes go rogue. Now that they no longer have the backing of the US government, Hunt's team have to make use of whatever they have to hand to try and restore faith to the US-Russia relations.

The set-up brings both humor and moments that will have you gasping to the film. The team are seriously lacking the tactical backing that they need to accomplish their tasks, but are still up for this seemingly impossible challenge. If there is only film you see in IMAX, it has to be Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, the scale of the mission and the amazing production design demands to be seen on the big screen.

The banter between Hunt and Benji is exceptional, especially the way that Benji makes outrageous suggestions is the most nonchalant of ways as he is fully aware that it's Hunt's life that is on the line, not his own. Ethan's reactions to the suggestions are always witty, made even funnier by the fact you know that he is mentally thinking that he does actually have to do it.

This is simply one of the best action films to hit the big screen for a long time, and even though they go down a tried and tested road, the old adage 'if it's not broken don't fix it' comes to mind. This is a thoroughly enjoyable way of spending a couple of hours, and let's hope the hinted at sequel comes to fruition.

Director Sam Mendes is the man responsible for bringing onboard such heavyweight talent and while it is certainly an interesting approach to a James Bond film it leaves many people wondering what direction the new film will take and whether these actors will overshadow 007 himself, although Daniel Craig was a highly regarded actor before he took on the role of Bond.

Albert Finney graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1958 and began his acting career on the stage and among his early roles was a part in "Coriolanus" alongside Sir Laurence Olivier and Vanessa Redgrave.

He received a BAFTA for "Saturday Night and Morning", his second film after The Entertainer, followed up by a Golden Globe and New York Film Critics Circle Award for his work in "Tom Jones". He won a second Golden Globe in 1970 for his portrayal of Scrooge in the musical version of "A Christmas Carol".

In the period that followed Finney decided to concentrate his theatre work, although he achieved some critical acclaim in "Murder on the Orient Express" (1974), "Wolfen"(1981) and "Shoot the Moon" (1982).

Remaining within the confines of a movie genre, for example, can hamper the creative process if a filmmaker allows themselves to fall into formula. Of course, some talented individuals push the limits of the box and redefine the field.

Alfred Hitchcock used his genius to uplift parts of the thriller genre to an admired and respectable level. While he remained within his "comfort zone", the thriller, he felt free to experiment and step outside those boundaries.

For the Canadian production company, Goldrush Entertainment Inc, their foray into the big leagues of movie production required them to move onto new ground. This version moves so quickly across the main points of the story that Scrooge's redemption feels a tad rushed, but maybe the songs are supposed to be the point. To be frank, there were some horror movies that have given me a couple of sleepless nights. One of them is the Friday the 13th Part Two. I know most of the people and critics have felt that the Friday, the 13th franchise has become a little boring. You know every three or four years there would be a sequel of the Friday the 13th, sometimes making us quite irritated and less interested in watching it.

Now why I feel that the movie Friday the 13th Part Two is worth watching compared to the other sequels and its prequel is because there are some scary stuff and the story also makes sense. The movie opens up with the killing of Alice, who was the only survivor in the first installment by Jason Voorhees. Now for some people who have not seen the first installment, here is a small piece of information.  A small boy named Jason Voorhees gets drowned in the lake at the camp Crystal Lake due to the irresponsibility of the two camp in-charges. Years later his mother Pamela Voorhees starts killing all the innocent campers who come to the lake as a revenge for her son's death. In the end of the first installment, she gets killed by Alice, and her son Jason is on a revenge spree in the second part.

In the second part, five years after killing Alice, a group of teenagers come to the camp Crystal Lake for camping. Jason takes each of the teenagers and kills them in a brutal way. One of the victims gets killed when Jason hangs him a barbed wire. Another victim, the sheriff, after finishing the investigation gets killed instantly by Jason. While sitting in his car Jason attacks and kills him with the set of claws from the hammer, spilling his blood on his car's windshield. Even a poor wheelchair bound camper does not escape from Jason as he gets killed by having a machete struck on his face. A camper girl who goes to investigate the death that has happened around the camp Crystal Lake gets stabbed with a kitchen knife by Jason while she goes to help the wheelchair bound camper.

The scenes of killing are gruesome. But the only part that disappointed me or what I felt awkward was the climax. The only survivor Ginny while being chased by Jason enters his shack and finds a shrine created by Jason for his mother. The shrine has the mummified head of Pamela Voorhees; Jason's mother surrounded by lighted candles and dead corpses including that of Alice. Seeing that she cannot escape from Jason, she wears his mother's sweater and tries to fiddle with the mind of Jason. Jason at first gets carried over, but after seeing the mummified head of his mother comes to his senses and tries to kill Ginny. Luckily her boyfriend comes at that time and he starts fighting with Jason. Seeing both of them in a fight, Ginny takes her chance and stabs Jason on his shoulder with a machete. Then they both escape and hide in a cabin. Jason escapes from his shack and searches for them.

Later, Ginny gets exhausted and falls asleep. She wakes up and sees that she is in an ambulance with no recollection of how she escaped and what happened to her boyfriend. In the final scene, they show the mummified head of Pamela Voorhees to show that Jason still continues his terror spree at the Crystal Lake camp.

I know this ending is confusing and does not make sense, but what make the picture scary and worthwhile to watch is the ghastly killing scenes and the deformed face of Jason which is shown at the end. For those who want to watch the movie, you could either rent its DVD or watch it on your TV on some of the popular channels offered by cable and satellite providers like Dish Network.

Here's hoping James Mangold's big, raucous, and ultrabloody remake of 3:10 to Yuma leads some moviegoers to check out Delmer Daves's beautifully lean, half-century-old original. That classic Western spun a tale of captured outlaw Ben Wade (Glenn Ford)--deadly but disarmingly affable--and the small-time rancher and family man, Dan Evans (Van Heflin), desperate enough to accept the job of helping escort the badman to Yuma prison. Wade, knowing that his gang will be along at any moment to spring him, works at persuading the ultimately lone deputy to accept a bribe, turn his back on "duty," and go home safe and rich to his family. That the outlaw has come to admire his captor intriguingly complicates the suspense. All of the above applies in the new 3:10, but it takes a lot more huffing and puffing to get Wade (Russell Crowe this time) and Evans (Christian Bale) into position for the showdown. Mostly, more is less. To Mangold's credit, his movie doesn't traffic in facile irony or postmodern detachment; it aims to be a straight-up Western and deliver the excitement and charisma the genre's fans are starved for. But recognizing that contemporary viewers might be out of touch with the bedrock simplicity and strength of the genre--not to mention its code of honor--Mangold has supplied both Evans and Wade with a plethora of backstory and "motivations." At the overblown action climax, the crossfire of personal agendas is almost as frenetic as the copious gunplay. (By that point the movie has killed more people than the Lincoln County War.) Best thing about the remake is Russell Crowe's Ben Wade, a Scripture-quoting career villain with an artist's eye and a curiously principled sense of whom and when to murder. As his second-in-command, Ben Foster fairly pirouttes at every opportunity to commit mayhem, and Peter Fonda contributes a fierce portrait of an old Wade adversary turned bounty hunter for the Pinkerton detective agency. --Richard T.
